BC COVID-19 Screening Program

BC COVID-19 Screening Program

The screening program will reduce the risk of COVID-19 in our workplaces and the community, and help us to continue responsibly maintaining operations and employment in B.C.

Keeping Our People and Communities Safe and Healthy

At Teck, health and safety is a core value and, since the onset of the global pandemic, we have worked together to safeguard the health of our people and the communities in which we operate.

To augment our existingCOVID-19 protocols and prevention measuresand help manage the risk of transmission at our worksites and in the community, Teck is implementing a voluntary COVID-19 rapid screening program for employees and contractors in B.C.

Phased Implementation

The screening program will be implemented in phases. Phase 1 will focus on workers at the Neptune facility upgrade project and the Fording River South Active Water Treatment Facility construction project.

These groups have been selected based on the potential for higher risk of transmission among those working in close proximity, e.g., in construction work settings.

Future phases will be implemented at Teck operations in B.C. Once timing is confirmed, details will be communicated to individual sites.

Participation

Participation in the program is voluntary, but everyone is encouraged to take part to help keep our colleagues, loved ones and communities safe and healthy.

If you would like to participate in the voluntary program, please visitcovidscreen.teck.comand use one of the following site-specific registration codes*:

Elkview Planned Plant Shutdown registration code: TECK-ELKVIEW
Fording River South Active Water Treatment Facility registration code: TECK-FROAWTF
Legacy Properties registration code: TECK-LEGACY
海王星设施升级项目(NBT Allison Project) registration code: TECK-ALLISON

*Registration for other B.C. projects and operations will be added in due course.

About the Rapid Screening Program

Your participation will help reduce the risk of COVID-19 for you, your family and co-workers and help ensure we continue to responsibly maintain operations, project progress and employment in B.C.

Rapid testing programs in other Teck jurisdictions and in many other settings have shown to be a very effective way of reducing the risk of COVID-19 in the workplace and in our community.

The voluntary screening program augments our existing COVID-19 protocols and prevention measures and ensures we continue to manage the risk of transmission of the virus at our operations, across our projects and in the community.

Teck sites in Alaska and Chile have already been conducting COVID-19 screening programs extensively, and these have shown to be a very effective way of reducing the risk of COVID-19 in the workplace and in our community.

In B.C., the program will be implemented in phases with the first phase to focus on workers at the NBT Allison Project and the Fording River South Active Water Treatment Facility construction project.

Subsequent phases of the program will be implemented at other Teck sites in B.C. in the coming weeks. Once timing is confirmed, details of implementation will be communicated at the individual sites.

This is a rapid antigen test, which detects potential COVID-19 infection. It takes only a few moments and involves a swab of both lower nostrils with a soft cotton swab.

The screening is administered via a rapid antigen test, which takes only a few moments and involves a swab of both lower nostrils with a soft swab.

An antigen test (also known as a rapid test) is typically used to screen asymptomatic individuals and detects potential COVID-19 infection. It involves a nasal swab of both lower nostrils with a soft swab and test results are typically delivered in an hour or less. Individuals will continue with their normal activities while awaiting results.

A non-negative result from an antigen test indicates the need for a confirmatory PCR test, which is typically used to diagnose symptomatic individuals, those with a non-negative antigen test result and close contacts of those testing positive for COVID-19. A PCR test is arranged through local public health.

This antigen test has been approved by Health Canada, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. and in many other countries, and has been used millions of times.

No test is 100% accurate. There is a risk of both false negatives and false positives. To reduce the risk of a false negative, we encourage people to be tested twice a week (or twice a set). To avoid the risk of a false positive, a non-negative antigen test result is confirmed with a PCR test.

The screening does not replace PCR testing being conducted by regional health authorities. If you receive a non-negative result from the rapid screening, you will be directed to undergo a PCR test at a regional health authority testing site.

Testing at a regional testing centre is also required if you have symptoms, have been in close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or in close contact of someone with symptoms of COVID-19.

About My Participation in the Screening Program

Participation in the program is voluntary, but everyone is encouraged to take part to help keep our people, loved ones and communities safe and healthy.

Participating in Teck’s COVID-19 screening program will help ensure we can continue to responsibly maintain safe operations, project progress and employment in B.C. and that everyone goes home safe and healthy every day.

Participants may discontinue their participation at any time.

The screening is administered via a rapid antigen test, which takes only a few moments and involves a swab of both lower nostrils with a soft swab. After the screening is administered, you will continue into work as normal. The test will be processed within approximately an hour.

If a non-negative result is received, you will be notified immediately and return home. You will be required to self-isolate, contact your local health authority (call 811), and arrange to get a PCR test.

The recommended best practice is to screen program participants twice a week (or twice a set).

If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, do not come to work, self-isolate, contact your local public health authority (call 811) and get tested for COVID-19. Inform your supervisor, including your testing status, and complete contact tracing.

The rapid antigen testing is for asymptomatic individuals only.

Yes, because, while the vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of getting very sick and the risk of dying from COVID-19, it may not keep you from being infected and then transmitting the disease to others.

It is very important that, even if you are vaccinated, you continue to follow all COVID-19 prevention protocols: wear a mask, maintain physical distance, stay home if you have symptoms, frequent handwashing and sanitizing, follow local health authority guidance, and consider taking part in Teck’s rapid screening program. This will help ensure the health and safety of your co-workers and members of your family who have not yet been vaccinated.

Screening will take place at the Pre-shift Temperature Screening Trailer at theElkview Operations Central Lab(555 Michel Creek Road). Screening will be available:

  • Monday, April 19, 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday, April 20, 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Screenings at theFording River South Active Water Treatment Facilityproject will take place at the AWTF project site (Prescreening Trailer), Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Screenings at the海王星设施升级项目(NBT Allison Project) will take place Monday to Friday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Medic Trailer in LD1.

The location and timing for the screening at each of Teck’s B.C. projects and operations is being determined. Individual locations will communicate directly with their people with details in due course.

Your participation can be discontinued and consent withdrawn at any time by calling 1.833.269.2642 or emailingcovidscreening@teck.com

Participants are strongly encouraged to use the online platform; however, a paper-based process will be available to anyone who is unable or unwilling to use a personal computer or personal mobile device to register or participate in the screening program.

The rapid screening program is currently available to Teck employees and contractors only. Should the program be extended beyond our employees and contractors, Teck will communicate this in due course.

About My Rapid Screening Results

If your rapid antigen screening delivers a negative result, no further action is required at that time. Please continue to participate in the screening program. Employees and contractors will only be notified if a screening result is inconclusive or non-negative. A record will be maintained of all negative tests.

If a non-negative result is received, you will be notified immediately via written notification delivered by your supervisor at your work location. You will then return home. You will be provided with guidance for your safe return home.

You will be required to self-isolate, contact your local public health authority (call 811), and arrange a PCR test. The local public health authority will also contact you to provide guidance to you and those close to you.

If your PCR test is positive, you will be required to self-isolate. Public health will provide any additional guidance.

About My Pay

The screening takes only moments and is integrated into your shift. As such, no additional compensation will be provided.

If your PCR test is negative, you will return to work (as long as you don’t have any symptoms) with no loss in pay for hours missed while awaiting your PCR test result.

If your PCR test is positive, confirming COVID-19, you will be eligible* for sick benefits from the time of the antigen test. As a reminder, Teck has had the waiting period removed for sick benefits for those employees with COVID-19.

*Applies only to employees currently eligible for sick benefits.

If your PCR test is negative, please speak with your employer about matters relating to pay while awaiting your PCR test result. If your PCR test is positive, please speak with your employer or union about sick leave eligibility.
